Christmas Trees

Christmas trees have been around for centuries, long before they were called Christmas trees and long before Christmas.

The idea all began, probably, when ancient peoples hung evergreen boughs around the doors and windows to keep the witches and ghosts away during the winter months.  People to the far north brought greenery inside and adorned their homes hoping to heal the sun god.  The winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, indicated that the sun or sun god was weakening and needed to be healed.  Hanging greenery was assumed to part of the cure.

The early Egyptians believed that greenery in the home indicated a triumph of life over death.  The tradition of bringing greenery inside continued through most civilizations, until it is believed the Germans actually began the Christmas tree tradition sometime during the 16th century.

Today the tradition continues, as does adorning the tree with decorative ornaments.
